I have been working at Gull Lake Centre for the summer, putting together videos and shooting photos for all the campers who come through the gates. It has been a wonderful opportunity to practice my photography, especially on days like these!

New 35mm Nikon AF-S 1.8G Prime Lens

I finally opted to re-invest in some new photography equipment, this time in the optical area.

New Nikon 35mm F1.8 Lens

I contemplated between the new 55mm and the 35mm, since the 55mm certainly has a unique close-up perspective (and from what I understand a slightly better portrait shot) but since I already have a 55mm in manual form, and 35mm seemed a bit more versatile, I opted for it in the end.

Nikon E-series 50mm F1.8 (film, full manual) Tokina 80-200mm F4.5 (film, full manual) Nikon 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 (kit, full auto)

Most of my comparisons will be to the kit lens my D40 came with, the 18-55mm stock zoom that is pretty much the cheapest lens Nikon sells. My first impressions are that this thing produces very sharp pictures. Perhaps I just haven’t picked up my DSLR in a while, perhaps I just haven’t been using RAW often enough, but these look pretty sharp to me. Thanks to the F1.8 aperture size, plenty of light can enter the camera in low light, which makes it easier to capture a shot without dropping shutter speed to blurry-inducing levels, or increasing the ISO on the rather limited sensor of the D40.

To compare, check out the two shots below, first with the 18-55mm at about 35mm at F4.6 (largest allowed at this zoom point) and 1/200 shutter speed. The next is the same image shot wide open (F1.8) with the 35mm prime. Both were shot at ISO 800 on the D40.

My goal was to be able to shoot in lower light without being forced into high ISO ranges, so this should help out quite a bit.

Migration to Flickr

So, in an ultimate move of irony, I’ve decided to migrate my photos to Flickr. About 5 years ago I started there, but was too bothered by the need to pay for a Pro account just to store my photos. I haven’t bought a Pro account yet, but will likely in the coming weeks. I’ll keep organizing the sets over on my Flickr Page, and you can enjoy the nicer UI, geotagging, sets, and other features that never really materialized in the (officially defunct) flickrer.

The move comes from the desire to simplify my workflow, while making the interface to various destinations simplified. Without a doubt, this move to Flickr will mean it’s one-click to get my pics from iPhoto to the Web, and simplify the integration of my photography into WordPress and jole-v3.

Gallery Updates!

This photo is one of my favourites

I realize that I’m not posting enough to the good old jole gallery, which, after all has been the cornerstone of jole.ca since the very beginning and the “jolephoto” monicker. It occurred to me today that there are a fair amount of people who come to my site to look around, but will just go straight to the gallery out of fear of my technical bloggy goodness, so I might as well keep it fresh for them.

Often I have photos that I’m quite proud of but that simply don’t have enough energy to go through and name and describe. While names and descriptions would be nice, I’m pretty sure it’s the photo that counts. So moving forward, I’ll be just uploading the pictures as-is with just the plain-jane DSC-o-rama title and (no description). I may however provide a brief update such as this one that describes some of the photos in the upload.

The ones from February 2010 are mostly of Snow Valley which lights up overcast skies beautifully with its bright white light. I’m not sure the photos I took did it justice, but I found it pretty neat.
Some are from Vancouver such as the one in the post and the trees by the ocean.
The sepia-looking shots are in fact not sepia-adjusted but actually the true colour with all the sodium lights illuminating the night at that time of day. I could adjust them to look white but then they simply look like day shots, so enjoy the feeling of a chilly Edmonton at 7pm.

I’ve been having urges to rework flickrer a bit, which I may or may not do at some point in the future, but for now just enjoy the photos I’ve dug up from 2009 and a few fresh ones from this month, and look forward to more frequent (albeit less descriptive) photo updates.

Finally, a shout out to the Edmonton Journal Student Photo Contest. Submit one photo from 2009 to the journal for a chance to win some cool prizes! (Students Only). I’ve already submitted mine!

Sticky Run

So for some reason I was taking photos of my Sticky Run. (When you need pens and stickies you just have to go!) With the lighting and b&w effect I had going on, things looked pretty cool.

Guide Your Way Home

It has been a while since I went out and took some pictures. I suppose winter was a bit of an inhibitor. I actually lent my SP-320 to my sister for a trip, so these shots (and any others in the next few weeks) are with my little F440 ultra compact, and considering the limited control, I thought they turned out extremely well. It IS good to go back to basics sometimes.
